Artist / Researcher
Nene Koyama (古山寧々)
Born in Gifu, Japan, in 1999.
Completed the Graduate School of Art and Design at Tama Art University in 2025.
She then spent one year as a researcher at the Takinoue Laboratory, Laboratory for Chemistry and Life Science, Institute of Integrated Research, Institute of Science Tokyo, where she developed artworks and conducted research on bio-art.
Since 2026, she has been enrolled in the doctoral program in Electrical Engineering and Bioscience, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Waseda University, researching artistic practices that cross aesthetics and science.
Her practice explores “relationships between humans and nonhumans” and “humans as seen from nonhuman perspectives,” primarily through kinetic art and bio-art.
Since childhood, she has been fascinated by living beings and “things that move,” and has been interested in questions such as “How do nonhuman beings perceive the world?” and “Where is the boundary between life and nonlife?”
These interests led her to expand her practice into kinetic works using electronics and bio-art.
She also examines how humans perceive, assign meaning to, and appreciate other forms of existence, seeking modes of perception and appreciation that do not take humans as the sole standard.
